Ryan Muirhead

It has been a decade since art made Ryan Muirhead want to be an artist. If there is such a thing as a conventional way to become an artist, Ryan did not arrive here in such fashion.  He candidly admits to not knowing his exact purpose, but looks beyond visions or art saving and elevating him, to something more tangible and immediate. His love for film stocks goes beyond still photography, as he was once a camera assistant, having loaded millions of feet of motion picture film onto magazines. The tactile and slower nature of film allows him to focus on the quiet moments, while giving things time and space to develop. The mystery and uncertainty that surrounds the final product, along with a genuine love of the process are key components to his preference for film and analog photography. Within his work, his favorite feeling to capture is authenticity. That the photo feels how it felt when it was being created is paramount. That the emotional content and impact of the photo doesn’t rely on tricks or elaborate editing, but that a little space was made for something beautiful to be felt.
